Plumbing Advice

How to fix a burst pipe?

Pipes are a vital part of your home running smoothly !

The Problem

Pipe bursts in your home.

If a pipe in your home bursts, it can cause serious problems. As well as presenting a possible hazard with electrical equipment, leaks can also weaken the structural integrity of walls and cause severe damage to carpets and furnishings.

Before you call in one of our professional plumbers, there are a few steps that you can take yourself:

The Solution

Turn off the water supply.

This should be done as soon as possible in order to prevent a constant flow of water causing damage. To do this, you’ll need to find the stoptap. The majority of stoptaps are found under the kitchen sink where the service pipe enters the home, although some can be found in the front or back hall of the house or at the front of your property. It’s a good idea to find out where your stoptap is located when you move to a new house, just in case you need to get to it in a hurry. It may also be worth testing it to make sure that it works and that you know how to use it. Once you’ve located the stoptap, switch it off by turning it in a clockwise direction.

Drain The System

In order to reduce the amount of leaked water it’s a good idea to drain the system and rid your pipes of water that is still circulating. To do this, turn on all the cold taps and flush any toilets. Once this is done, turn off your water heating system. Wait a while for the water to cool and then drain the hot taps in the same way as you did with the cold.

Safety Precautions

If the leak has occurred near an electricity source you should immediately turn off the power at the mains. Be cautious though – if the mains themselves are wet, do not attempt to touch them and consider calling in a professional to ensure that there is no serious damage.

Temporary Repairs

Temporary repairs can be made to the pipe by using a tightly bound cloth or tape to breach any splits or breaks. However, this is only a temporary fix and it’s not a good idea to run any water down a pipe that has been repaired temporarily for prolonged periods of time. This temporary fix will minimise the spread of water escaping from the pipe and prevent any extra damage.

A leaking or burst pipe can be a serious problem, so if the situation worsens and you feel that you need professional help, give us a call on 0448 243 905  and we’ll help you to fix the pipe permanently so that you don’t risk any further damage to your property.

How to fix a leaking pipe?

Loosing unessecary water from your home is not just wasteful, but can lead in some cases to severe damage to your property; so checking your pipes to make sure they are not leaking is always a worth while task.

The Problem

Leaking pipe

While your approach to dealing with a leaky pipe will largely depend on how serious the leak is, it’s always important to try and fix the problem as soon as possible.

The Solution

Shut off the mains

The first thing to do is to shut off the main water supply in your home. This is controlled by a valve, also known as a stoptap, which will usually be located under your kitchen sink on the ground floor or at the front of your property. Turn it all the way clockwise to completely switch off the mains water supply.

Relieve pressure

You now want to try and relieve as much pressure in the system as possible in order to take the strain off the pipe. Turn all the taps that use the affected pipe on. This should drain the pipes, giving you easier access to the problem and preventing further water damage. If the taps don’t drain the pipe, look for bleed valves that may help you.

Repair the leak

Now that you have access to the leak, you could have a go at repairing it if you feel confident enough. To do this you will need to replace the fittings and any sections of damaged pipe with a new section using the appropriate fittings.

Test

Once you think you have solved the issue, turn the water supply back on and check to see that there is no further water seepage.

If you need any further help or advice, feel free to give us a call. One of our qualified engineers will be happy to visit your home and help you to solve the problem and ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

What to do if your toilet isn’t flushing or working properly?

Having a toilet that won’t flush properly can be a great annoyance and inconvenience! to avoid this, it’s important to fix any problem as soon as possible, before they get ut of hand.

The Problem

Identify the problem

There are a variety of different problems with flushing that can occur in a toilet and it’s a good idea to work out what problem you’re facing before you start. Is it not flushing at all? Is it flushing slowly? Or is the water just running intermittently? The precise nature of the problem will largely decide your course of action, so it’s important that you work out exactly what’s going wrong.

The Solution

Plunging

If your waste is not flushing at all, the most common cause is a blocked toilet. If you’re comfortable enough doing so, this is a situation that it is possible to remedy yourself. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and find your plunger, as you’ll want to try and dislodge anything that’s blocking the flow of the water. Apply firm pressure while you’re plunging to get the desired result.

Clogged ports

If your water swirls but doesn’t filter out, then you may find you have clogged ports. These can be found by looking for a smaller hole, known as the siphon hole, inside the rim of the toilet bowl. You can use a small screwdriver or pointed object to gently clear away any build-up of grime or deposits. Be careful not to scratch the porcelain. Once you’ve done this, test the flush to see if this has solved the problem.

Toilet not flushing

Finally, when you operate the toilet handle does the toilet flush? If it doesn’t then there is an issue with the syphon which is located inside the cistern. You can purchase your parts from any DIY shop. To fit the new parts you’ll need to isolate the water supply to the cistern, drain down the cistern and dismantle the toilet. Once you’ve fitted the new parts, re-assemble the toilet, and restore the water supply. The valve should be located somewhere behind the toilet, usually on the left hand side. You can then check for any water leaks. It’s a good idea to flush the toilet several times to check that it’s flushing correctly

If none of the above methods turn out to be successful, then feel free to give us a call. We’ll send out one of our qualified engineers to help you identify the problem and get your toilet working again.

How to unblock a toilet?

If there is one essential facility in your house you need to use on a daily basis it is the toilet. a blocked toilet can be a real nightmare – inconvenient, tricky to deal with and perhaps a little embarrassing if you live in a shared house.

The Problem

Blocked toilet

Blocked toilets are a fairly common occurrence and it’s possible to attempt to clear the blockage yourself. If the situation worsens or you feel concerned about tackling the problem, then feel free to call us. We’re happy to help you resolve the situation and get your toilet back to normal.

The Solution

do not flush

The first rule of dealing with a blocked toilet is simple: don’t flush! However instinctive it is to try to flush the toilet, this usually creates more problems than it solves. Excessive flushing is likely to cause your toilet to overflow and create a serious mess, so leave the handle alone and think about removing the blockage before you try to dispose of the build up.

Plunge Away

The next step is to grab a plunger in the hope of loosening the blockage, just as you would approach a blocked drain. This could turn into a dirty job so it’s advisable to find yourself a pair of gloves before getting stuck in. If you’re lucky this should do the trick and fix the blockage. When you’re totally convinced that this has done the job, flush the toilet once again to check that everything is operating as it should be.

Avoid Chemicals

In the event that using a plunger is not enough to dislodge your blockage, you might be tempted to opt for chemical products to deal with the problem. While chemical drain cleaners such as caustic soda can be efficient in clearing troublesome blockages, they can also be harmful to the environment and potentially hazardous in the home. If these chemicals come into contact with skin they can cause irritation or even burns which creates a serious hazard for your household. Try to avoid using these chemicals yourself where possible.

Call the Professionals

If your toilet blockage is really stubborn and you can’t get it to shift or if it keeps recurring frequently, then it might time to let us step in and help.

At GAP Trade Services we have a qualified team of plumbers who will be happy to visit your home and help you to solve the problem. Recurring blockages could be caused by a problem further down the pipe. Our expert plumbers have the tools and experience needed to shift hard-to-reach obstructions to prevent problems occurring in the future.

How to unblock a sink?

The Problem

Blocked sink

We all know how easily our home sinks get blocked and we’re all familiar with the trouble it can cause if the problem persists. Fortunately, if the blockage isn’t too severe, it can be fairly straightforward to fix and you may even be able to do it yourself.

The Solution

Clear the Plughole

The first thing to do is to clear out your plughole as thoroughly as possible. Though this may not be the source of your blockage, this will make life easier when it comes to flushing the sink through.

Remove the Blockage

Before you get stuck into the U bend, it’s a good idea to flush through a solution to clear out any grease. The best solution to use is a simple mix of baking soda and vinegar. Pour the baking soda in first, followed by the vinegar. You should hear a slight fizz as the solution does its work. Wait a short time and then flush through with warm water.

For more stubborn blockages you can also use a small amount of bleach to clear a blocked drain if you feel that it is necessary. When using chemicals such as bleach always ensure that you read the instructions and follow the advice on the bottle to keep you and your family safe. Once you have poured a small amount of bleach down the sink allow it to sit for as long as possible before you flush with hot water. The longer you leave the bleach the more likely you are to clear your blocked drains. If you are able to, leave it to work overnight before running the tap in the morning.

Avoid using harsh chemical drain unblocking solutions such as caustic soda as these can burn skin on contact and may leave a hazardous residue around your sink for hours after use.

Tackle the U Bend

If your blockage is a bit more severe, you will need to drain the sink and examine the U bend. Take a look beneath the sink and locate the first bend in the pipe which falls down from the plug hole. Place a washing-up bowl or similar receptacle below the bend and slowly unscrew the U bend, allowing the water to drain at a steady pace.

When the water has drained completely, take the U bend and clean it thoroughly. You may like to use a hooked coat hanger to drag out anything which is lodged deep into the tube.

Call Gap Trade Services

If you are struggling with your blocked sink, then give us a call. One of our professional and experienced plumbers will be happy to have a look and help you to solve the problem.

How to unblock a bath or shower?

The Problem

Bath or shower blockages

If your bath or shower overflows, the damage could be costly and troublesome to clear up. The good news is that you don’t necessarily need to call in the professionals to help. If the blockage isn’t too severe, it’s something which you may be able to deal with on your own.

The Solution

Get the Right Equipment

Before you begin, make sure you’ve got a pair of rubber gloves close by. When it comes to blockages in the bathroom you never know what the cause could be, but there is a good chance you don’t want to be getting too much of it on your hands!

Clear the Blockage

The first thing to try is to pour a solution down the plug hole in the hope of breaking down whatever it is that’s causing the blockage. Do this by pouring a small amount of baking soda down the drain, followed by a small cup of white vinegar. The result will be a relatively small chemical reaction which you’ll be able to hear as the solution bubbles away, breaking down any debris which is caught in your drain. If this does the trick, flush through gently with warm water. Avoid using any chemicals such as caustic soda to clear a blocked drain as these can be harmful if they come into contact with skin. Residue from heavy chemicals can remain present on the exposed area of a drain, presenting a hazard for several hours after use. If you wish to use a small amount of bleach to help clear your drains then make sure that you read and follow the advice given on the back of the bottle to ensure that you and your family stay safe.

Clear the Drain

While breaking down the debris is always a good place to start, sometimes it isn’t enough to tackle the problem head on. This method might allow water to pass once again, but it’s always a good idea at this stage to clear the drain fully, even if only to prevent future blockages. If you can remove the panel on the side of your bath or shower, this will reveal a U bend similar to that which you may find under your kitchen sink. More often than not, a blocked bath or shower is caused by a build-up of grease or gunk in this bend of piping.

You should be able to remove the U bend with relative ease, ensuring that you have something to catch any water when the pipe is removed. The U bend can then be cleaned thoroughly by hand. Be sure not to run any water through the plug hole until the pipe is replaced.

Clearing blocked gullies?

The Problem

Find the blockage

Locating the spot at which the gulley is blocked is the first step to fixing the problem. This is a really important step as it will determine how you deal with the situation and save you time and energy in trying different methods. If the blockage is occurring right at the point at which the water enters the gulley, it should be fairly easy for you to remove any leaves, twigs and debris that are obviously causing a problem.

If there is a grid protecting your gulley, you may also want to remove it and give it a clean, removing any build up of grease and gunk that may have accumulated. If the gulley is blocked further down, you’ll have to try a slightly more sophisticated solution.

The Solution

Use a drain rod

If you can’t immediately see the problem, it’s best to try and use a drain rod to feel for any obvious blockages. This may also loosen any debris that has collected in the gulley and free it up a little, helping with the drain unblocking. It’s best to apply a little pressure, but not to be overly forceful, as you don’t want to cause any permanent damage.

Plunger

If a drain rod doesn’t do the job, your next step is to use a plunger to try and free up the drainage space. If you don’t have a suitable plunger, you can create a makeshift device by wrapping old rags around the head of a mop and securing them tightly. For plungers to work, you need to ensure that the opening of the gully is completely covered by the head of the plunger.

Wash out

If any of these methods clear your drains, then it’s a good idea to wash the gulley out thoroughly with cold water from the hosepipe and a little boiling water. This should loosen any remaining debris and clear the pipe properly.

If none of these methods work, don’t hesitate to give us a call at Gap Trade Services and book a visit from one of our qualified engineers.

Maintaining your drains

The Problem

Blocked drain

A blocked drain in or around the home is something that can not only cause damage to your home; it can be a really smelly problem as well. If you can keep your drains functioning properly and with little problems, you’ll find that blockages and other issues rarely arise.

Prevention is usually far more effective than cure, and with these helpful tips and tricks you’ll find it far easier to keep your drains running smoothly.

The Solution

Hot water

To maintain your indoor drains, one of the easiest ways to keep them clear and free from blockages is to pour boiling water down them on a regular basis. A kettle full of boiling water once a week can be a substantial help in removing build ups of fats, oil and grease and preventing blocked drains.

If you do this regularly enough you’ll find that it keeps your drains clear and prevents the need for any drastic action because something has gone wrong further down the line.

Baking soda and vinegar

While it’s not a good idea to use strong chemical cleaners on your drains, as you can never be sure what they’ll react with and if they will damage your drains, you can use a weaker cleaner.

The best solution is a combination of baking soda and vinegar poured down the drain, followed by hot water. You will be able to hear a small chemical reaction occurring once you have done this. This reaction helps to remove stubborn dirt and grime and should be done two to three times a year as a form of seasonal maintenance.

Watch what you drop down the drains

One of the best ways to maintain your drains is by being extremely careful with what you put down them. While most drains are designed to carry waste and small items such as toilet roll, waste pipes don’t deal very well with grease and fat from food, cleansing wipes, dental floss, nappies or sanitary products.

You should be very wary about what you leave to go down your drains and should try and dispose of waste into the rubbish bin where possible. With fats and grease you can pour them into a bottle or food storage container and dispose of them into the garbage.

Clear debris from outside

If you’re trying to keep your drains outside well maintained, it’s a good idea to make sure they are clear of debris at the point at which they enter the ground. This involves checking your gullies for leaves and twigs in order to ensure that they don’t restrict water flow at any point.
Remember, if you need any further advice or professional help with drain unblocking don’t hesitate to give us a call. Our professional engineers are always on hand to offer help and support.

Gas Safety & Advice

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon Monoxide is a highly poisonous gas that is very difficult to detect as you cannot see, smell or taste it.

  • High levels of Carbon Monoxide exposure can prove to be fatal, even low exposure can cause lasting damage.
  • Carbon Monoxide is known as the silent killer as around 30 people die each year from Carbon Monoxide poisoning, and many more are seriously injured.

Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning?

The symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning can be similar to having a slight flu. If you are suffering from Carbon Monoxide poisoning you may suffer from: Headaches, Nausea, General lethargy, Dizziness, Flu-like symptoms that appear to get better when you are away from the area.

Asking yourself some basic questions may help you to assess the situation:

  • Is more than one person in the house affected?
  • Do the symptoms ease or disappear when you are away from the house, e.g. on holiday, but recur on returning home?
  • Are the symptoms related to the use of a fuel burning appliance?
  • Are the symptoms worse in winter, when the heater is in use?

All appliances that burn wood or fossil fuels can emit Carbon monoxide.

  • Carbon Monoxide is produced when these fuels are burned without sufficient air or ventilation. That’s why it is often produced by appliances that have been incorrectly installed or maintained.
  • If you have an oil, gas or wood burning appliance, fire, water heater or cooker you should fit a carbon monoxide detector. GAP Trade Services can assist and advise you on Carbon monoxide alarms.

Key simple checks for Carbon Monoxide

Carbon Monoxide is difficult to detect but there are some simple signs to look out for:

  • Staining, sooting or discoloration on or around your gas appliance, fire and water heater.
  • Keep air vents in doors, walls or windows clear and make sure your chimney or flue isn’t blocked.
  • Check pilot lights and other gas flames that normally burn blue. If the flame changes to yellow or orange, CO might be present.
  • Have your appliances and flues checked each year.

If you believe you or any of your family are suffering from Carbon Monoxide poisoning please consult your doctor immediately and give GAP Trade services a call to arrange inspection/repair or replacement of your appliance. Whilst there we can also fit a Carbon monoxide alarm for future peace of mind. For more information on carbon monoxide please readCarbon Monoxide Information

My hot water isn’t working?

Hot Water trouble shooting checklist

There could be a number of reasons why your hot water isn’t working. You can fix several problems yourself, avoiding a callout.

Try these tips first:

  • Check the gas, electrical and water supplies to the appliance are turned on. It’s surprising how easily they can get accidentally switched off.
  • Check the thermostat is turned up and the clock timer is on.
  • Got a system with a permanent pilot light? Check that it hasn’t gone out – this is a very common problem with older appliances.
  • Do you have a customer-operated reset switch (not one that needs you to remove any casing)? These are usually found on the appliance. check your user manual to see if it needs re-setting.
  • Try turning the electrical supply to the appliance off and on – the switch is usually near the appliance. This might reset your system and resolve the problem.
  • Are other gas appliances or the electrics affected? If so the problem is bigger and you need to contact us or Call us on 0448 243 905.

Gas Hot Water units

A gas hot water unit heats the water to supply all the baths, showers and sinks around your home. The two types are continuous flow heaters, and storage heaters.

Gap Trade Services can complete a new installation, service or repair of both types, or even relight the pilot on a difficult service. Both of these types of gas hot water system are generally more energy efficient than an electric unit, and this means better for the environment. If you do have a gas connection but are currently using an electric unit, it may be worth considering switching next time you need a replacement water heater. Often all that is required is to extend your connection to the location of your water heater.

A continuous flow gas hot water unit is actually considered as efficient and eco-friendly as a solar unit. This is because water is only heated as it is being used, and when a temperature control unit is installed, you are able to set a precise temperature when you take a shower or bath. This means that you are only heating up the water in your gas hot water system to the desired temperature, rather than heating the water and then adding cold to bring it down to the desired temperature. Call us to find out more. Another great advantage with a continuous flow heater is that they save a lot of space.. (Continuous flow gas hot water units aren’t recommended for low pressure gas areas or low water pressure areas.)

To install a continuous flow gas hot water system a gas meter regulator upgrade may be required of your existing regulator is inadequate. A storage heater may thus be preferred. We can supply and install or fix all brands. With older units the pilot light has a tendency to go out. If you are having difficulty with your unit, a engineer will be able to relight the pilot on your gas hot water system.

Hot Water Systems and Heaters in general

A hot water system is the complete integrated installation of one or more heaters including the cylinder and all the associated plumbing to supply the heated water to the outlets where it is required.

The services that we provide include repair, or if necessary, the installation of all brands of heaters, including the following: a Rheem hot water system; Dux; Vulcan; Rinnai; or Bosch. Not everyone is aware, but the manufacturer’s life expectancy on a storage type cylinder is generally less than ten years.

A Rheem hot water system, for example, has a manufacturer’s life expectancy of six to ten years. You can check the manufacture date of your heater in the specifications printed on the cylinder, and you should consider replacing it if it is older than ten years. Another simple test is to run the hot water in a white bath or basin, and if it is slightly rusty or discoloured, it is an indication that your cylinder may be rusting on the inside and you may need to replace your hot water system before it splits and leaks.

Hot water systems tend to split when water pressure is at its highest in the early hours of the morning, often forcing customers to pay a plumber emergency rates to disconnect the system and then return to replace it, as well as causing severe damage to the property inside and possibly outside. It is essential that a tray with a drain or a Terminator valve be installed by a plumber with all new hot water systems to minimise the water damage caused in the event that the hot water cylinder does leak and/or split.

When installing a new hot water system, always insist that your plumber installs the correct pressure limiting valve. This will prolong the life of the cylinder of your heater – sometimes by as much as 50% – as excessive pressure causes unnecessary stress on the cylinder and will cause it to split prematurely. Customers should also be aware that manufacturers often require that a pressure limiting valve be installed or the warranty may be void. Refer to the installation guide provided with your hot water system for further details.

Whether you have a Rheem hot water system, a Dux, a Vulcan, a Rinnai or any other heater – we can make sure that your flow of heated water keeps on running.

Air Conditioning Advice

What are the benefits of Air Conditioning?

The major benefit is a comfortable climate-controlled indoor environment all year round. An air conditioning unit has a number of functions including heating, cooling, dehumidifying and fan only, this does depend on the system you choose to install. The dehumidifying function is particularly beneficial for those with asthma.

What are some types of air conditioners available?

  • Ducted Systems
  • Split Systems
  • Room Air Conditioners
  • Multi Systems
  • Inverter Air Conditioners

These types of systems depending on model and specifications can provide just cooling or if the system has reverse cycle can provide heating as well.

What makes of air conditioner are there?

There are many make makes and manufacturers of air conditioning unit, some are well know by all some aren’t. It is important to research into what you require from your unit as well as reviews of the particular makes and models, as with air conditioning you do get what you pay for it terms of quality of goods, efficiency and how reliable and effective the units can be. Below is a list of some popular manufacturers that make air conditioning units:

  • Daikin
  • Mitsubishi electric
  • Mitsubishi heavy industries
  • Fujitsu
  • Samsung
  • LG
  • Actron Air
  • Temper Zone
  • Panasonic

Remember: When you select an air conditioner the cheapest doesn’t always make it a worth while investment in the long term. At Gap Trade Services we can offer you advice and a solution to your needs and requests.

Why is maintenance important?

Regular maintenance ensures that your air conditioning system will work when you need it most and keep on working for years to come. Benefits of regular maintenance include:

  • Reduces breakdown costs.
  • Keeps unit running efficiently which in turn saves on energy consumption.
  • Maximises the life cycle of your air conditioning unit.

What are the installation requirements?

Correct installation is vital to ensure the efficient performance of the unit. In the installation process, allowances must be made for drainage from the indoor unit on cooling mode and outdoor unit on heating mode. Positioning of the indoor unit is important and should not inhibit the flow of air.

Where possible the indoor unit should be placed centrally on a wall directing the airflow to the centre of the room. When this isn’t possible selecting a unit with louvres that are motorised will work just as well. Creating the air throw you require. With the outdoor unit, it should be positioned in a well-ventilated area on a solid footing and must be easily accessible for servicing purposes.

Take into account that installation faults may void manufacturer warranties, and so only qualified air conditioning installers should carry out this work.

What are some of the factors to consider when buying and installing split air conditioners?

Make sure the unit you purchase is the correct size, allowing the unit to cycle off when the correct temperature is reached. This allows for the compressor to switch on and off as required rather than running continuously. This is very important as if not sized correctly will cost you more on your electricity bills.

Set your thermostat so that you feel comfortable rather than cold. Most of us feel comfortable at between 22 and 24 degrees in summer. Remember that in summer you will be dressed in summer attire.

Make sure the unit is securely mounted to avoid unnecessary vibration and noise. Mounting through the wall will generally give a more secure install than through glass.

Maintain the filters of your air conditioner on a regular basis and in the case of split systems, have your unit serviced by a qualified tradesperson at least every two years depending on the environment the unit is installed in, some units require a professional service once a year. Our technicians will be able to assess your conditions and advised on the service time periods.

What are some of the factors to consider when locating your outdoor unit?

Be sure to have maximum clearances around the outdoor unit, to minimise the chances of hot air being recirculated back into the outdoor unit; especially if there is a wall directly opposite, as this can cause the unit to overheat and fail especially on hot days.

Is the condensing unit going to be located under a carport or roofed entertainment area? These areas are more reflective of sound.

Maintain the filters of your air conditioner on a regular basis and in the case of split system/ducted/multi-systems have them serviced by a qualified tradesperson at least twice a year, depending on the environment the unit is installed in. This will help maintain the efficiency of the system.

The job (air conditioner installation) was carried out with thorough preparation, efficiency and excellent attention to detail. He was meticulous in his desire to satisfy our needs and requirements. My wife was particularly impressed by the way he left the house as he found it. We would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Gap Trade Services.

100% recommend Mike! Very efficient, professional and all round top bloke. We now use Mike’s services at our hotels on a regular basis. Have tried many services and Mike is by far the best around.

    Thank you Mike.

I called a couple of companies, some out of business and others not returning calls.  I called Mike and he called me back with info about my air conditioner?  He knows his stuff.  He came out at a convenient time and fixed my air conditioners, which is a godsend in this heat of Sydney.

I would highly recommend Mike to anyone that needs work done.

    Thanks Mike.
